It’s 5am — dark, cold and the middle of the week. The sun will only be up in 2 hours, so I finish getting dressed in less-than-regular work attire and grab my light as I walk out the door. I’m on my way to the vehicle that will become my office and boardroom for the morning.
Engaging the correct gear, I begin to power the machine that will take me to my first meeting of the day. The difference between this day and any other day, is that my transport, office, and boardroom are all my bike.
You see, I have begun to, wherever possible, do my business meetings on the bike — and here’s why:
In today’s world, it’s nearly impossible to fit everything in, so I always look for opportunities to do more than one thing at a time — in a way that doesn’t dilute focus. This is the best example I have found of that, in my world. The ability to have productive meetings while I am training on my mountain bike not only saves time, but actually increases focus and fitness simultaneously.
Some of the best business conversations I’ve had have started on the bike, and many of them have led to actual deals and partnerships being formed off the bike.
When we get moving and start to raise our heart rates, a few things happen that are beneficial to our process and our progress:
- We release endorphins which makes us happier and more open to ideas, conversation and people in general. We are literally happier when we’re cycling.
- We’re sharing something at a deeper level than just business with the person we are riding with, and that further creates trust and breaks down otherwise present barriers. It also gives us something to nerd out about, which is great!
- We’re in a healthier environment. Depending on where you’re riding, and if you are lucky enough to have access to the incredible mountain bike trails of Cape Town South Africa as I do, then the scenery that you’re exposed to will further enhance your happiness, focus and general ability to build relationships.
- According so some studies, we literally become smarter when exercising so it’s a great time to explore complex conversations. I run a Blockchain-focused software development studio, so complexity something I deal with all the time — and the complex conversations that sometimes come with this seem easier when they’re happening on the bike.
If you’re looking for ways to manage your time, do better business and up your game with a healthier lifestyle, getting on the bike is your best bet — but of course, there are other ways you can enjoy being active while taking a meeting. Whether your preference is the gym, the trail or even a walk around the city, you’ll find that moving while working will improve your temperament and productivity. There’s really nothing to lose. If you’re in Cape Town, and keen to discuss and explore this concept first-hand, get in touch with me. I’m always happy to hit the trail in the name of productivity: Mike@nonacreative.com
