OrderIn Named Best Consumer Solution

When Dinesh Patel started OrderIn 5 years ago, he walked around Cape Town convincing restaurant owners to sign up and allow customers to make orders online.

A big win at the 2017 MTN Business App of the Year Awards for the proudly South African food delivery service.

When Dinesh Patel started OrderIn 5 years ago, he walked around Cape Town convincing restaurant owners to sign up and allow customers to make orders online. Today, the restaurant network includes over 1,200 eateries in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Pretoria and Durban, and OrderIn has been named Best Consumer Solution at the recent 2017 MTN Business App of the Year Awards.

Now in it’s sixth year, the competition is aimed at highlighting innovative apps, with the consumer solution category focusing on customer-centric products that create convenience and ease for users. Past winners include fin-tech startup SnapScan, DSTV Now, and Nedbank. Over 500 entries came in this year, with only 60 making the finals, and OrderIn competing with Mr P Fashion, TrackBox, VoiceMap, and Empower Diabetes in its category.

Scaling Up… and Up

“We started out by simply wanting to solve a problem,” explains Dinesh, “but as we scaled, our mission grew — our ambition now, is to become the leading food delivery service in South Africa, by order volume and value.”

Achieving this required building on the success of the web platform and creating a mobile app to extend the reach of the business — this led to Dinesh partnering with Nona in 2016. Nona’s high-tech mobile and emerging technologies division, Outlandium, took on the task of creating the app, prioritising simplicity for users, while allowing for all the same functionality that customers had come to expect from OrderIn.

This meant working with OrderIn to adapt and extend features, and thinking about what would make for a first-class mobile experience, and not one that was simply tacked on.

An iterative, sprint-based build process followed, during which the two teams worked together to develop the best possible user experience for the native mobile app.

Following a Pixel Award for mobile app development at the IAB Bookmarks earlier this year, OrderIn’s win is yet another nod to Nona’s growing mobile capabilities, and the studio has every intention of continuing to produce work that’s on par with the industry’s top players.

For Dinesh and his team, this is only the beginning — they already have their sights set on expanding the restaurant network to twice its current size, and creating more value for their users through the app.

Early next year, customers are going to be blown away by OrderIn 2.0.
